Natural swimming pools

Plants clean the water. You just swim.

Sketch your pool, pick the features, and see what it costs to build it yourself, with help, or done for you. Then take the full parts list and build it.

The designer

Build it on paper first

1

Pick your shape and size

This is your swim zone. The green planted area goes beside or around it on the plan, and you can drag it into place.

2

Your place

3

How it's built

Shale is full of tiny pores, so it holds far more water-cleaning bacteria than gravel does.

  • IncludedPlanted filter, pump and skimmer
Water is pulled down through the filter media and plant roots, all day long.
  • IncludedAirlift aeration stones
More oxygen means less algae. Bubbles under the planted zone keep the media and roots full of oxygen, so the good bacteria outwork the algae.
  • IncludedUV clarifier
Knocks out green water while the plants grow in.
4

Waterfalls

Move and size waterfalls on the plan. Pick how each one sounds here.

5

Around the pool

Each deck or seating spot on your plan gets its own surface and shade.

6

Safety

Rules vary by city. An automatic cover can replace a fence in some places, so check yours.

7

Anything else?

Why we do this

We built ours in 2014. We're still swimming in it.

I filmed the build start to finish. Twelve summers later it's where our family spends its evenings: kids jumping off the dock, lilies blooming, the waterfall running. Everything in the designer comes from what that pool has taught me.

Straight talk

What a living pool asks of you

Spring

It changes with the seasons

Water can cloud up in spring and clear as plants and tiny grazers wake up. That swing is normal, and it settles.

Years 1 to 3

String algae shows up early

Algae gets a head start while plants fill in. You net it out by hand, keep fertilizer and runoff away, and the plants win as they mature.

pH 6.4 to 7.6

Hard water needs a plan

Western tap water runs alkaline, and high pH feeds algae. We test it, skip rock that raises pH, and size the system for it.

Weekly / yearly

Upkeep is light

Empty the skimmer weekly. Each fall cut back plants. Each year clean the biofilter and re-seed bacteria. You never drain it.
